The tuning process for the engine included a “running in period”. Andrew from Hallam Racing suggested we put about 500km of easy road riding on the engine, lets just say we weren’t short on volunteers for this part of the project! A few of the guys from Triumph Australia put the first 200km on the engine, checking all the time that everything was going well. I heard the reports streaming in from these guys that this was not like any Bonneville they had ever ridden (and that have tried quite a few modified triumphs over the years). To say I was a bit excited at the prospect of piling a few kilometres on the bike myself was an understatement. I got the call late in the week to go and collect the bike, and straight away I started planning my ride.
A had a few mates racing up at Broadford for the weekend so I decided that this would be the perfect destination, it goes without saying that I took the scenic route from Whittlesea across to Flowerdale and down into Broadford. This is a fantastic stretch of road that gave me a good opportunity to stretch the legs of the new motor.
Its hard to find the words to explain just how much this motor has transformed. Its now a monster with effortless power everywhere in the rev range. It makes the bike so easy to ride, there is loads of power and torque meaning you can hold a higher gear than normal and just wind the power on, makes riding on a winding road pretty exhilarating. It also needs to be treated with caution and constantly reminds you that there is a lot more HP available than normal. Despite the big gain in power the engine is still very smooth across the whole rev range, the power is really linear and this makes for a fun and easy ride. My day finished up back in St Kilda just as the sun was setting, its a day of riding that I won’t forget in a hurry.
Now that then motor is run in we can take it out of the Bonneville chassis, strip it down, check everything then rebuild it ready for the race tuning. I really can’t wait to see what we can get out of this engine, already its amazing but I have a feeling that we are only part of the way there.
